What to Expect at an Invasive Plant Pull

What will we be doing?

Most of our invasive plant pulls focus on removing English ivy (Hedera helix) but can also include removing other invasive plants such as holly, periwinkle or small balsam. Learn about other invasive plants in the forest here.

Ivy growing in long vines along the ground and also grows up trees. Most of the ivy growing up trees has already been cut in the areas we work meaning most of the work will be pulling the vines off of the ground. Ivy can regrow from small amounts of vine so getting as much as possible is important.

Pulling ivy can be hard work on your arms and back. Sometimes those vines fight back! Be sure to take care of yourself and take breaks whenever you need. Anything you can do to help is greatly appreciated and we want you to be safe working out there.

For more detailed guidance on English ivy removal along with other invasive plants check out the Best Management Practices of the Invasive Species Council of Metro Vancouver.

What to bring and wear?

Please bring garden gloves and secateurs if you have them. If not, no worries, we have spare pairs for you!

Be sure to wear boots or other shoes good for stomping around in the forest and a jacket for the rain.

A water bottle and a snack can also be a good idea. Removing invasive plants is hard work!
